Alpaca vs. Llama – Learn the differences between them
Alpacas and llamas get confused all the time. Although they do share many features, they are very different animals.
A llama can weight up over 400 lb, which is more than double that of an alpaca. That’s a big size difference, especially when you’re trying to take one for a walk or considering what type of pet to get.
Alpaca vs. Llama

Alpacas
- weigh 120-180 pounds
- have a shorter and more curved back
- are not as strong as llamas
- have a tougher time fending off prey
- have smaller ears
- have small, sometimes squished faces
- are bred for solid colours

Llamas
- weigh 290-440 pounds
- have a long straight back
- are stronger than alpacas (you’ll notice if you get kicked!)
- can fend off prey and are often used to protect a herd of alpacas
- have long banana shaped ears
- have longer faces
- are bred for a multi-coloured look
