Alpaca vs. Llama – Learn the differences between them

 

Alpacas and llamas get confused all the time. Although they do share many features, they are very different animals.

A llama can weight up over 400 lb, which is more than double that of an alpaca. That’s a big size difference, especially when you’re trying to take one for a walk or considering what type of pet to get.

Alpacas

  • weigh 120-180 pounds
  • have a shorter and more curved back
  • are not as strong as llamas
  • have a tougher time fending off prey
  • have smaller ears
  • have small, sometimes squished faces
  • are bred for solid colours

Alpaca - Modern Family

 

Llamas

  • weigh 290-440 pounds
  • have a long straight back
  • are stronger than alpacas (you’ll notice if you get kicked!)
  • can fend off prey and are often used to protect a herd of alpacas
  • have long banana shaped ears
  • have longer faces
  • are bred for a multi-coloured look
